About Word Chain
Word Chain (also called Word Association, Last Letter, or Shiritori in Japanese) is a vocabulary game played in classrooms, on long car rides, and in language learning programs around the world. The rule is elegantly simple: each new word must begin with the final letter of the previous word, forming an unbroken chain. The game ends when a player cannot think of a valid word — or repeats a word already used.

How to Play

- End on a vowel: Words ending in A, E, I, O, U give you the most options for the next word — steer your chain toward vowel endings.
- Beware of X and Z: Words ending in X or Z are chain-killers — the next player has very few options. Avoid ending there yourself.
- Stock common starters: Know words starting with every letter, especially uncommon ones like Q (queen, quest, quill) and X (xenon, xylem).
- Long chains need variety: Branch into different topic areas (animals, foods, places) to avoid exhausting a single category's words.

❓ What happens if the chain gets stuck on a hard letter?
Every letter in English has at least some common words — even X (xenon, xylem, xerox) and Z (zero, zinc, zone, zoom). If you're truly stuck, use the Give Up button to see your final score.
❓ Are proper nouns allowed?
No — our dictionary contains common English words only. Proper nouns (names, places, brands) are not valid, matching the standard rules of competitive Word Chain.
❓ What's a good chain length?
A chain of 10+ words is solid, 20+ is impressive, and 30+ puts you in expert territory. The theoretical maximum is unlimited since English has enough words — it's your memory and vocabulary that's the real limit.
